One direction around the world fares require all travel be in a single continuous routing around the globe and the itinerary must cross both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The trip may be in either East to West, or West to East, and backtracking is severely restricted. Most directional fares allow for unlimited stopovers.
These fares are frequently used by business travelers with just a few specific stops . They tend to be some of the least expensive of the around the world programs. Three stops minimum are usually required. Generally these fares must be booked with one of the airlines participating in the program or a travel agent specializing in around the world fares.
Singapore Airlines: By itself offers the least expensive directional Around the World fare we know of, but unfortunately they do not go completely around the world. You can however have a journey that starts in New York and ends in Los Angeles or vice versa. The segment from New York to Los Angeles would be at your expense. No travel to Southern Hemisphere permitted. Coach: $2,266 Business: $5,299 First Class $6,699 Fare quoted in U.S. dollars for departures originating in the United States. Sample Itinerary: New York - Amsterdam - Singapore - Tokyo - Los Angeles Singapore Air-Virgin: This partnership allows completion of the journey around the world but at present this can only be accomplished from Los Angeles or New York. This is an inexpensive one directional fare. No travel to Southern Hemisphere permitted. Coach: $2,600 Business: $4,850 First: N/A Fare quoted in U.S. dollars for departures originating in the United States. Sample Itinerary: Los Angeles - London - Delhi - Singapore - Hong Kong - Taipei - Los Angeles Singapore Air - Continental Airlines: This combination allows travel from any city in the United States that is serviced by Continental. Continental has a strong European presence and Singapore Air is a major carrier in Asia. Continental Airlines is a major provider of these type of fares and several other programs with different partners are discussed below. Coach: $3,330 Business: $6,540 First Class $8,590 Fare quoted in U.S. dollars for departures originating in the United States. Chicago - New York - London -Singapore - Tokyo - Los Angeles - Chicago United Airlines: offers several around the world programs in addition to its' participation in the Star alliance. Some of the programs offer unique destinations and are less costly than the Star Alliance fares. All the itineraries listed below require travel to continue in one direction around the world with no backtracking, and you must cross both Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The fares listed are for departures from the United States but this program is available in most regions of the world. United Airlines & South Africa Air: This is an unusual merger of two airlines that allow some interesting routings on the African Continent. Coach: $3,344 Business: $5,770 First: NA Fare quoted in U.S. dollars for departures originating in the United States. Los Angeles -Denver- Chicago - Miami - Rio De Janeiro - Sao Paulo - Johannesburg - Hong Kong - Tokyo - Los Angeles. United Airlines - Emirates Air: This is a reasonably priced one directional Around the World fare. This fare is offered for options that allow travel in the South Pacific or without Australia travel for very reasonable rates. Coach $2,913 Business $5,770 First $7,375 Fare quoted in U.S. dollars for departures originating in the United States. Sample Itinerary: Los Angeles - Hawaii - Tokyo - Hong Kong - Singapore - Sri Lanka - Maldives - Dubai - Istanbul - Zurich \ Paris - Washington D.C. - Miami - Los Angeles Note: No service exist between Paris and Zurich, this segment has to be arranged separately. United Airlines-Cathay Pacific: Two fare structures are offered with this two-airline airfare. The more expensive of the fare structures allows flights in the South Pacific while the lower cost fare does not. These fares are both one directional Around the World fares. Without South Pacific: Coach $2,780 Business $4,304 First $6,242 Include South Pacific: Coach $3,550 Business $6,070 First $8,388 Fare quoted in U.S. dollars for departures originating in the United States. Sample Itinerary: With South Pacific option: Los Angeles - Melbourne - Adelaide - Hong Kong - Paris - London - Boston - Chicago - Denver - Los Angeles United Airlines - Saudi Arabian: This is a low priced one directional fare that allows for some interesting routing possibilities. No travel to Southern Hemisphere permitted. Coach: $2,570 Business: $3,618 First: $5,019 Fare quoted in U.S. dollars for departures originating in the United States. Sample Itinerary: Los Angeles - Chicago - New York - Paris - Rome - Riyadh - Singapore -Hong Kong - Tokyo - Hawaii - Los Angeles
Air New Zealand now offers a very competitive priced Around the world fare utilizing just the flights of this one carrier. Cathay Pacific offers several direction based Around the World fares with a few different European carriers including Lufthansa. You must contact Cathay about these fares. South African Airways works in conjunction with many airlines beside the "Wings" program participants to offer around the world one directional fares
